Baudin’s Black Cockatoo Hard Enamel Pin
Baudin’s Black Cockatoo (Zanda baudinii) is an endangered cockatoo found only in the forests of south-west Western Australia. Like their close cousin, the Carnaby’s, they have dark scalloped plumage, white cheek patches and white tail panels. Males have a dark beak and a pinkish-red eye-ring, while females have a paler beak and a grey eye-ring.
We’ve shown a male and female pair perched on a marri branch, with one busily working away at a marri nut. Marri is a vital food source for Baudin’s, and we wanted to capture that moment mid-snack.
Fun fact: Baudin’s and Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos look almost identical. The easiest way to tell them apart is the bill: Baudin’s has a longer, narrower upper bill, perfectly shaped for prising seeds out of tough marri nuts.
