Bush Stone-Curlew Enamel Pin
The Bush Stone-curlew ( Burhinus grallarius ) sometimes referred to as the Bush Thick-knee, Is a nocturnal ground dwelling bird native to Australia. It's range is widespread and can be found in every state in Aus except for Tasmania. these Stone-curlews reside in open forests, grassy plains and arid scrubland where they forage for small critters in the night like bugs, spiders, lizards and frogs to eat. Typically they are seen during the day just standing still where their brown and grey feather pattering camouflages with the ground clutter. while their camo tactic works great against sight predictors like birds of prey, It doesn't work well against scent predators like cats, dogs and foxes. Introduced predators and land clearing has lead to a decline in the Bush Sone-curlews native range by approx. 90%. They are declared as an endangered species in NSW and VIC.
Fun Fact: These birds are known to make high pitched eerie wailing or screaming sounds at night and early in the morning. This is actually a contact call between birds but it is incredibly haunting.
