Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo Enamel Pin
The Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo (Zanda latirostris) is an endangered species found only in south-west Western Australia. These striking birds are covered in dark, scalloped feathers with a white cheek patch and white panels in their tail. Males have a dark grey beak and a pinkish-red ring around the eye, while females have a pale, bone-coloured beak and a grey eye ring. Their wailing call is a familiar sound around Perth as flocks move between feeding and roosting sites.
Our design features a male and female pair perched among banksia, with one tucking into a banksia cone. Banksia is one of their favourite foods, and we loved the way its bold flowers and serrated leaves frame the pair.
Fun Fact: Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo is named after Ivan Carnaby, a Western Australian naturalist. Its scientific name, latirostris, means “broad-billed”.
Part of our Carnaby’s Crusaders collection. 25% of every sale goes to Carnaby’s Crusaders to help protect WA’s endangered black cockatoos.
