Crested Pigeon Hard Enamel Pin

The Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes) is a native Australian bird known for its thin, spiky black crest and the distinctive whistling sound its wings make in flight. It’s sometimes called the Topknot Pigeon, though that’s technically a different bird altogether. Look closely and you’ll spot the beautiful iridescent green and purple patches on its wings.

Once found mainly in inland and western Australia, the Crested Pigeon has spread rapidly thanks to land clearing and its highly adaptable nature, and it’s now a familiar sight in backyards and parks across most of the country.

Fun fact: That famous whistle comes from a specially shaped, narrow flight feather on each wing, which vibrates as air rushes over it. The faster the take-off, the louder the whistle, and scientists have found other pigeons treat a loud, panicked whistle as an alarm signal to flee.
