Crested Pigeon Enamel Pin

The Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes) is a native Australian bird known for the distinct, thin black crest on its head and a characteristic whistling sound produced by its wings during flight. The Crested Pigeon is sometimes referred to as the topknot pigeon, though this is technically incorrect as the topknot pigeon is a separate bird. They have a feathered black spike on the top of their head and beautiful iridescent primary wing feathers.

Previously only found in inland and Western Australia, the habitat of the Crested Pigeon has expanded rapidly due to settlement and their highly adaptable nature. They are now found widespread across Australia.

Fun Fact: Most Aussies are familiar with the whistling trill produced by the Crested Pigeon when it takes flight. This whistle is actually caused by 2 feather, one on each wing. These fancy, unique feathers are narrower and vibrate as air passes over them during downstrokes. The more intense the takeoff, the more noise is created. It is believed this is used as a warning system to other pigeons and birds in the case of a predator or danger, making the Crested Pigeon the only bird that communicates through sounds produced by feathers.
