Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo Hard Enamel Pin
The Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii naso) is found only in the jarrah, marri and karri forests of south-west Western Australia. Males are glossy black with brilliant red panels in their tails, while females are speckled with fine yellow spots and have barred orange-yellow tail bands. Listed as vulnerable, these cockatoos rely heavily on old-growth forest for both food and nesting.
We’ve featured a male and female pair perched on a marri branch, surrounded by the marri nuts that make up a large part of their diet. We wanted to show off the contrast between them, from the male’s bold red tail to the female’s delicate spotted plumage.
Fun fact: The large tree hollows these cockatoos nest in can take over a century to form, which is why protecting old trees is so important to their survival.
