Glossy Black Cockatoos Hard Enamel Pin

Glossy Black Cockatoos are the smallest of Australia’s five black cockatoo species, found in eastern Australia from central Queensland down to eastern Victoria. They’re dark brown-black with a short crest. Females have yellow patches on the head and a tail barred in red and yellow, while males have a solid red panel in the tail.

We’ve perched this pair on Scrub Sheoak (Allocasuarina paludosa), as Glossies feed almost entirely on sheoak seeds, often favouring the very same trees year after year.

Fun fact: As well as the mainland population, there’s a small, isolated population of Glossy Black Cockatoos on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, the focus of a long-running recovery program.
