Orange-bellied Parrot Enamel Pin

Regular price $16.00

The Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster) is a critically endangered, small migratory parrot endemic to southern Australia. It is estimated that fewer than 100 remain in the wild, currently making them one of the rarest birds in the world. Slightly bigger than a Budgerigar, the Orange-bellied parrot has a grass-green head, a yellow belly, and a distinct bright orange patch on its belly.

We perched the Orange-bellied Parrot on Beaded Glasswort (Salicornia quinqueflora), also commonly known as beaded samphire, bead weed, or glasswort. A species of succulent often found in the salt marshes, these parrots migrate to.

Fun Fact: The Orange-bellied Parrot is one of only 2* migratory parrots in the world. They breed in Tasmania during the summer months and migrate to the south coast of mainland Australia, between South Australia and Victoria, during the cooler months.

*Technically, there are 3 species of parrots that have been recorded to migrate. However, the third (Blue-winged Parrot) is only partially migratory.

A lot is being done to fight the extinction of the Orange-bellied Parrot through the efforts of Zoos Victoria and BirdLife Australia. You can help too by:

  • Reporting any sightings of OBPs in coastal VIC, SA, and NSW during Winter to BirdLife Australia.
  • Participating in BirdLife Australia counts.
  • Support and donate to groups like Zoos Victoria and BirdLife Australia.
  • Raise awareness and encourage support.
