Princess Parrot Hard Enamel Pin

The Princess Parrot (Polytelis alexandrae), also known as the Rose-throated Parakeet, Spinifex Parrot or Alexandra’s Parrot, is a nomadic parrot from the arid heart of Australia, mainly in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They’re one of Australia’s least-known parrots, as they’re elusive and roam huge areas of desert woodland, scrubland and sand dunes, feeding on the seeds of grasses and shrubs.

When conditions are right, several pairs come together to form small breeding colonies, usually in the hollows of eucalypts lining dry watercourses. They’re opportunistic breeders, only nesting when rain brings enough food, which can be a tricky balance in the outback!

Our design is based on a male Princess Parrot, perched on native Mulla Mulla (Ptilotus exaltatus), a desert plant with stunning pink flower spikes.

Fun fact: The Princess Parrot was named in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who later became Queen of the United Kingdom.
