Splendid Fairywren Hard Enamel Pin

The Splendid Fairywren, known simply as the “Blue Wren” in Western Australia, is a small songbird found across a large part of Australia, from central-western New South Wales and south-western Queensland across to coastal Western Australia. Males in breeding plumage are a dazzling mix of blues with black and violet markings, while females are soft greyish-brown with a blue-tinged tail.

Unlike their Superb Fairywren cousins, which have done well in suburban gardens, Splendid Fairywrens haven’t adapted to city life and have disappeared from many urban areas altogether. We’ve perched ours on native Kangaroo Paw.

Fun fact: Male Splendid Fairywrens pick pink or purple flower petals and present them to females as part of their courtship display.
