Steller's Sea Eagle Enamel Pin
The Steller's Sea Eagle, named after the German zoologist, Georg Steller, is a large sea eagle found in coastal areas of Northeastern Asia. They are considered the heaviest eagle in the world and the world's most magnificent bird of prey for their striking and impressive appearance.
The current population is stable but vulnerable and slowly decreasing as over-fishing, pollution, and climate change impact their food sources. Over-fishing has caused the Steller's sea eagle to feed on carrion, resulting in lead poisoning due to the use of lead ammunition to hunt deer. In response, the use of lead ammunition on Japan's Hokkaido Island is outlawed.
Did you know? Unlike other eagles, the Steller's Sea Eagle is exceptionally vocal and has been described as sounding like a very loud seagull.
