Steller’s Sea Eagle Hard Enamel Pin

The Steller’s Sea Eagle, named after German naturalist Georg Steller, is a huge sea eagle found along the coasts of north-eastern Asia. It’s considered the heaviest eagle in the world, and with its massive orange beak and bold white shoulders, it’s often called one of the most striking birds of prey on the planet.

Listed as vulnerable, its population is slowly declining as overfishing, pollution and climate change affect its food supply. With fewer fish around, many eagles turned to scavenging deer carcasses and suffered lead poisoning from hunters’ ammunition, which led to lead ammunition being banned on Japan’s Hokkaido Island.

Fun fact: Unlike most eagles, Steller’s Sea Eagles are surprisingly loud, and their call has been compared to a very loud seagull.
