Carnaby’s / Short-billed Black Cockatoos Hard Enamel Pin
Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, also known as the Short-billed Black Cockatoo, is a large, endangered black cockatoo found only in the south-west of Western Australia. Their greyish-black feathers are tipped with white and cream, creating a beautiful scalloped pattern, and they have a short crest, cream cheek patches and a broad cream band across the tail. Males have a pink eye-ring and dark grey beak, while females have a mid-grey eye-ring and a bone-coloured beak.
We’ve perched this pair on Flame Grevillea (Grevillea excelsior), also native to the same region of Western Australia.
Fun fact: Carnaby’s nest in hollows in old eucalypts, which can take well over 100 years to form. Losing old-growth trees is one of the biggest threats to their survival.
